Japanese Washi Paper

Japanese paper has been made, continuously improved and the range extended for almost 1500 years. It is both the range and the quality resulting from this long history that has given Japanese paper its reputation for excellence. As a result, this refinement of technique gives the user of Japanese paper tremendous flexibility in how it is used.

Drawing & Print Paper: Sheets

A large selection of archival acid-free papers are available for screenprint, blockprint, lithography, etching, sketching and more, suitable for all types of drawing and printmaking materials. We also carry a selection in inexpensive papers for proofs, study drawings or classes. Many pastel papers can also be used for other purposes, such as drawing or printmaking. Each paper can have it's own unique qualities. Try a few and see which is best for you.

Drawing & Print Paper: Rolls

We can special order a number of papers in rolls. Please contact us for a price quote. We have listed on our site two of the most popular rolls that we do stock regularly. We also carry Moon Palace, an oriental paper available in 12 and 18 inch rolls x 50' length. This can be used for a variety of tasks - drawing or printmaking, watercolour and Chinese painting, paper screens or lampshades and more!

Watercolour Paper: Sheets

22 X 30" sheets are the most economical way to buy watercolour papers. They are produced, purchased and stocked in volumes to provide the best pricing. Each paper has its own particular qualities, such as its surface sizing and whiteness, on top of the choices of weights or particular surfaces offered. Trying them is the best way to find out if a paper is suited to your style of work. Sampler packs are available.

Watercolour Paper: Pads

We carry economical pads and sketchbooks for watercolour. They work well for watercolour pencils too. Most are coil-bound. We also carry pads of different formats, such as square sizes - just ask.

Watercolour Paper: Blocks

Blocks have paper cut to the desired size and then all the edges are glued together. This helps to prevent the paper from buckling too much while it is wet. Keep the finished artwork on the block until it is completely dry. The paper will shrink back and become flat again. To remove the artwork gently run a palette knife under the paper's edge and lift off the top sheet. The block is now ready for the next painting. TIP: Since a block allows an artist to work only on one sheet at a time, I suggest that you purchase the largest block you can afford and use watercolour tape to mask off smaller areas. That way a two or more paintings can be done at the same time.

Watercolour Paper: Rolls

If you wish to create large format works on paper, watercolour paper rolls are an advantage to get, because the paper is both heavy and strong as well as oversize. As may be expected, it is not as economic to aquire as a roll of (lighter) drawing paper.

Pastel Papers

We have a large selection of sanded pastel papers: Sennelier Le Carte Pastel, Art Spectrum ColourFix, Wallis Pastel Paper and St Armand Sabretooth. Oriental Rice Papers

Kinwashi, Unryu, Dan Xuan, Masa and Chiri are just a few of the many rice papers we carry. Many of these sheets are a much larger size than the standard 22 x 30". Moon Palace (see picture) is available in 12" and 18" rolls, each 50 feet in length. Check out our decorative handmade papers too.

Decorative Handmade Papers

We aer proud to carry a number of handmade paper from the St Armand Paper Mill in Quebec. While Select Imports provides us with a large selection of beautiful handmade papers from around the world. “Is it acid-free?” These papers are not made using an acidic process like western mill made papers. As a result, these papers fall naturally in the “neutral” pH zone. This makes them safe for scrapbooking, art projects & other keepsake crafts where longevity is important. Duralar is a 14 x17" sheet acetate/mylar wet-media film of archival quality, specially treated to accept paints such as airbrush or watercolour, pens, and markers without beading, crawling, or chipping. Watercolorists or airbrushers can use this for trying out washes or colours before applying the paint to the actual peice of work.
