Encaustic Art Sets
Encaustic Art Wax Blocks are produced to a carefully developed formula with concern for a high sense of quality and safety. Any particular encaustic paint mixture will have in its own unique behavior and working manner depending on the waxes chosen, type of pigments used, inclusion of other materials (e.g. resins) and of course the overall quality of ingredients.
The waxes carry the CL label which indicates safety in the material but caution in its use - careless use of hot implements can cause skin burns!
SIZE: These Wax Blocks are approximately: 1 5/8"x7/16"x15/16" weighing just under 1/2 oz.

Kama Encaustics Kama Encaustic is a paint made using beeswax. In order to use the "hot" wax technique a hotplate or stove top is necessary to melt the waxed-based colours and keep them heated so that they retain their fluidity Our encaustic colours are made using the same high quality pigments as our other products without the addition of any fillers or adulterants. The inclusion of Dammar resin in our formulation creates a film with greater transparency and hardness. We do not use turpentine or any other solvents in the manufacture of these colours, therefore no toxic vapors are emitted by the encaustic when it is melted. The high concentration of pigment in our paint will enable you to achieve a high level of opacity if it is applied in its pure form. However you may also render you colour more transparent by adding pure beeswax or other compatible mediums during the painting process.

Encaustic Tools
Our heated spatulas can be used to both fuse and manipulate the surface of your work. You can scribe, carve, burnish, blend, or model the wax with them. A temperature regulator must be used to prevent the wax from overheating and becoming dangerous.
Our different heads were designed from sculpting, painting and printing tools. Each shape is designed to serve multiple functions. Pictured from top to bottom are the Scoop, the Horn, the Shoe, the Iron, and the Spatula.

R & F Encaustics
The world’s finest encaustics are made by R&F Encaustics. There are 80 ready to use colours. The pigment is carefully milled in a medium of beeswax and dammar resin. No turpentine or other solvents have been used. Encaustic Medium is the encaustic paint without pigment. It is used to extend the colors in order to create transparencies.
It is important when extending the colors to use the encaustic medium rather than plain beeswax. There are two reasons for this: 1) It maintains the hardness of the film. 2) Encaustic made only with beeswax will develop a bloom in cold temperature that can only be removed by reheating the paint. The damar prevents this blooming.
Refer "Introduction to Encaustics" handout for helpful tips and advice.

Encaustic Waxes
Carnauba is a vegetable wax imported from Brazil where it is harvested from the leaves of certain palm trees. It comes in flakes. It is harder and has a higher melting temperature than beeswax. Since Carnauba is easier to melt than damar resin, some encaustic artists substitute it for damar or combine it with the damar to make their own encaustic medium. Microcrystalline Wax is synthetic wax that has been used for a long time in encaustic painting because it is more flexible than natural beeswax. Candelilla Wax has a melting point between bees wax and Carnauba Wax. It is next in hardness to Carnauba. Alberta Bees Wax Pure Beeswax is one of nature's most perfect products. Prized since ancient times, fragrant beeswax candles burn longer and cleaner than ordinary wax candles. In fact, pure beeswax has the highest melting point of any known wax. Its slow, smokeless flame gives off more light and heat than other waxes and there's no dripping. Made by industrious honey bees from the nectar of flowers, beeswax has a sweet, natural fragrance all its own. MADE IN ALBERTA, CANADA
