Get your copy autographed while Rheni is in town.

R & F Encaustics

R & F Encaustics Workshops

In the modern renaissance of traditional materials, Encaustics have secured a niche in Edmonton.  Thanks in part to a couple of wonderful local instructors like Dianna Hanna and Lorna Kemp - we’ve been encouraged to bring R&F Encaustics to Edmonton. If you have ever dreamed of traveling to New York for a workshop we are excited to say their resident artist, Laura Moriarty, will present several workshops at The Paint Spot this fall. Laura Moriarty is an encaustic painter and printmaker who creates both singular work and multi-part wall installations. Her work is exhibited widely and is included in many publications. She has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and The Crafts Alliance of New York State and has taken part in many Artist-in-Residence programs both in the US and abroad. Her work is featured in Joanne Mattera's book: The Art of Encaustic Painting. To view more of Laura's work, go to http://www.lauramoriarty.com/.

Artist Talk with Laura Moriarty

Friday October 16, 2009

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Only $5.00 and

RSVP is necessary as space is limited.

Session will include

    * Historical and Contemporary Artists working in Encaustic

    * Discussion of Laura's work

 “Working at the boundary of painting and sculpture, I create intricate, imagined environments made entirely from the clustered fragments of deconstructed paintings.  Each piece begins as a flat painting on panel, built up in layers that explore color relationships.  Excavating these paintings, I compress the wax into forms that resemble strange fossils, geodes, bones and shards.  Like an archaeologist, my practice exposes and preserves what is beneath the surface.  Folded, crumpled and faulted; my pieces are records of the events that formed them.  I collect and individualize each element in order to reassemble them into grand arrangements that erupt from the wall or floor.” – Laura
