 "O Canada Project" a work in progress installation February 1 - 28, 2005.
Artist's Statement
O'Canada Project is a sequel to my previous installation A Peace Project which was created for the celebration of the millennium. This current exhibition celebrates our nation's culture and diversity. Its message remains the same. The following eight words: compassion, kindness, respect, understanding, patience, tolerance, gentleness and forgiveness are reverberated in more than 30 different world languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Cree, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Icelandic, Inuit, Japanese, Latin, Sanskrit....... This installation is intended to be a point of departure. I hope that viewers find here a quite place to explore their own personal quest for peace, inside their hearts and in the world beyond.

 Wild Things
Recent work by
JamesTrevelyan
The works in this exhibit certainly refer to wildlife and are a continuation of the creative explorations of birds based on closed observation of birds but are no means scientific illustrations. They are more about the process of spontaneous image generation with the character, life and actions of birds in mind. I am trying to capture the essence of birds, through gesture, shape, colour and movement, remminiscent of the Oriental traditions of calligraphy and brush painting.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the art in this exhition will go to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. www.wildlife-edm.ca |

"Opening"(meet the artist)
Saturday, January 7th
3 pm - 5 pm .
When I was a child I knew what art was.
Upon becoming an adult, I lost that understanding.
However,
Yoyo Ma playing The Swan,
Dewey Redman playing Somewhere over the Rainbow, &
Jane Bunnett playing For Mercedes Valdez,
Van Gogh’s Crows over Cornfield
Rembrandt’s Old Man in his Study &
Frida Kalho’s The Column
provoke response from a single place, deep inside myself:
be it ‘art’ or ‘soul’, or ‘God’. I try to create my paintings from this phenomenon.
Like Neverland, you must believe in ‘it’ & your ability to go there, in order for it to exist. Thus, I need to thank all those people that have believed in ‘the belief’ and my ability to reach it. You know who you are

Eleusis- Harcourt House
At Eleusis, in ancient Greece, the followers of Dionysus came together to find personal delivery from the daily world through physical or spiritual intoxication and initiation into secret rites. Dionysus, the god of wine, agriculture and fertility of nature symbolizes the celebration of life and regeneration each spring.

Morbid Anatomy
September 2 - 30
The installation “Morbid Anatomy” is inspired by the remarkable poetry of the Peace Region’s most prolific and unknown poet: W. T. Morris. The poem that this installation is named after explores a deep labyrinth of suppressed desire, phantasmagoric imagery and inarticulate personal loss. Its main focal points are the literary character of Ophelia, from Hamlet, and a real person of the same name. The two women’s personae’s shift and blend until they speak with one voice. I have used this poem’s imagery: the drowned girl, the wing, the machine and, most centrally, the image of Ophelia in her soaking wedding dress rising out of a farmer’s field in Demnit, Alberta, to create an homage to the memory of this remarkable poetic achievement.
This installation is part of an on going series that I’ve been exploring for the last five years or so. In it I have been examining fantasy and dream through a kind of poetic visual form. Through this poetic form I strive to examine hidden features of contemporary existence. The structure of the installation is intended to emulate the form of the original poem, but not to copy or illustrate it. The original is a work on its own, and is used as a springboard for me to launch into a new area of exploration. I would prefer not to decode the installation too specifically as I feel that would limit the viewer’s contribution to the poetic form I am trying to achieve. If I can achieve only a fraction of the poem’s original power I will have succeeded .

Trees & Fields;
A Quantum Leap
What do quantum theory, trees and painting have in common? “What the Bleep Do We Know?” Surf the wave and the particle manifests. Through Zero Point Field we and all matter are connected to the further most reaches of the cosmos? The tree is symbolic?
I use habits that allow the painting a freedom of assertion. Yet, I am involved. The hand and the brush are extensions, inclusions. Glimpses of nature and spontaneous actions are practiced. Sustained focus is avoided. Abstract impressions build. Paint transforms dissolves or creates shapes and images. Potential is endless.

Simone in Black, and Other “Women of Great Personal Charm and Beauty.”
October 3 - 31
Opening:
Thursday October 6th
3:00 - 6:00 PM
This show is work-in-progress. Simone, whose poise, grace, sexuality and self-control I admire, offered, last spring, to model for me. She is an artist’s wife, a professor and the mother of three teen-aged girls. As I find other interesting women from the arts and professions generously offering to pose, the project is growing into a report on the social condition of women and girls of all classes in 2005 Canada.
In spring 1989 the following ad appeared in The Globe and Mail:
Canada’s leading national newspaper desperately needs responsible visual arts critic, not interested in “mastery” and not threatened by “the other”, to provide informed responses to contemporary work by women artists.
Search committee: The League of Women of Great Personal Charm and Beauty, Exemplary Canadian Patriots, Feminists, Defenders of the Earth, Survivors of Many Neglects and Troubles.
Apply: Box 5663, The Globe and Mail(Lind, Jane, Joyce Wieland Artist on Fire, James Lorimer and Company, 2001, p 297-299)
“Woman of Great Personal Charm and Beauty, etc.” are the words John Bentley Mays used to dismiss Joyce Wieland’s contribution to the history of visual arts in Canada. He used this phrase in reviewing her retrospective exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario in April, 1989. Her enraged colleagues threw a picnic on the grounds of the AGO under this banner, and advertised in the Globe and Mail to have JBM replaced.
I use the phrase to signal my interest in how much actual change in the social position of women has occurred since the picnic. It is a question I discuss with my models. Since they choose their own poses and accessories, a strong collaborative element develops in each sitting, providing energy, humour, vigour, timeliness and verbal observations on vital issues for contemporary women.
The paintings are made spontaneously, with pencil and oil paint on birch panels or heavy gessoed archival paper, from life, without preliminary studies or photographic reference. The sitters often observe that their portraits depict not the outer appearance as much as a layer or two inwards, their psychological condition. Text is incorporated into the grounds to document conversations and telling comments that emerge during the sitting between model and painter.

The female image has been the core of my artwork for thirty-five years and as such reflects on the nature of art in which the human subject has dominated. This show attempts to examine the affect that Aphrodite has had upon us, carried from roots of the ancient world through its various incarnations up to the present. it is not an attempt to portray the mythic image of the Goddess but to engender in the work here, the physical beauty of the female form which, in the end, is what Aphrodite embodied. It is not objectification nor is it deification but instead, it is an appreciation. |

 AD PARNASSUM
Sacred to the god Apollo, Mount Parnassus was home to the Muses, whom legend would credit with all artistic inspiration. Working with the human form in the tradition of the ancient Greek artists, who are the basis for much of western art tradition, this group of Albertan artists explore their link to the ancient themes in a variety of media.

 Mobiles and Pendulums
by Todd Safronovich
Exhibit runs June 5 - 30, 2006
Todd Safronovich was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He left Edmonton, in 1995, to attend Sherdian College in Oakville, Ontario. Following graduation from Sheridan College’s glass program, Todd returned to Edmonton and began to create his unique glass objects.
Glass provides Todd the ideal medium for which he can explore texture, opacity, and transparency all at once.
“I love to see color combinations, shapes, and textures that stand out and demand to be noticed, whether it be in nature or in our created world. Artistic objects are all around us. I feel my work preserves and appreciates these everyday forms”.

 River's Edge
New Works by
Fiona Connell
&
Shane Golby
______
Exhibiton Runs:
Sept. 30 - Oct. 28
_______
The works in the exhibition are records both of the 'edges' of physical places (fields and water systems); the 'edges' of artistic disciplines and styles; and the 'edges' or fragments of life experiences.
Both Connell's and Golby's artworks in River's Edge are also on 'the edge as concerns the symbolic aspects to their pieces. Water is a universal metaphor for life and the conduit for movement from one state of existence to another. For both artists, this 'passage' down a river informs their creative endeavors. |

Original Digital Fine Art
I was trained as a traditional painter and have taken many art instructions as a member of the ACACA from artists including courses from the University of Alberta Extension Department. As a traditional artist, I am completely self-taught in the electronic media. I changed to Digital Fine Art after being introduced to the fractal program called Fractint . Other programs followed and I have done my art with the computer since 1993. I have used a digital camera for the last 6 years and I have done many photo manipulations including portraits of people. My works consist of painting and drawing directly on the virtual screen, digital photography and manipulations, 3D drawings, algorithmic rendering, collages from my own works.
I create original prints in my own studio with Epson2000P with archival pigmented inks on coated papers (to the limited size of 13”x19”). http://www.ansgardthomson.com/

The Biggest Brick
Drawings and paintings
Sept 2005 - Dec 2006
Exhibition Runs
January 4 - January 31
Opening Reception
Saturday January 6
4 pm - 6 pm
These works come from a series of over 1200 drawings produced from September 2005 to the present. While loss and memory were the catalyst, these made up portraits have become an expression of the self more than anything – a compulsive desire to make a visual mark of what is contained within – a documentation of the emotional state at the time of their creation. Faces emerge on the page without any specific reference. Forms are erased and re-drawn – removing what was there while leaving a trace of it behind to inform the final drawing. Captions written on the page further inform the state of the mind while drawing – sometimes relating specifically to the resulting image, or a separate fragmented thought that exists for only that brief moment, but none the less connected to that precise period of time.

Body Mapping
 Living with X
A bodymapping exhibit depicting the realities of living with HIV
March 1 – April 30, 2010
Bodymapping is a creative approach to sharing life experiences through art. It is also a treatment information and support tool, a process of self-discovery, and a means of building community.
The bodymaps in this year’s Living with X exhibit were created by the participants of HIV Edmonton’s 2008 and 2009 bodymapping workshops. They are men from Edmonton who contribute greatly to the HIV/AIDS movement.
HIV Edmonton works with those infected with, affected by and at risk of HIV. We work collaboratively to provide education, support, and advocacy.
Quotes from bodymapping participants:
I would recommend this workshop for anyone living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The bodymapping workshop brought to my attention some of the aspects I was not fully aware of beforehand. For example, the simple fact of how taking medications actually improved my overall health and boosted my hopes in my future of living a fuller and more constructive life. I have discovered that I am not alone in this very real issue which affects more people than I was aware of after attending the workshop!
It is a very enlightening experience, not only learning a new skill that is painting and color play, but letting the bodymapping process help release tension and fears. This is something anyone can do no matter where they think they are in dealing with HIV. I share my experiences and learn from others their experiences with HIV. I tell all my HIV positive friends that they should really experience this event. It was a lot of fun.
Try it – I guarantee you’ll like it. Since the bodymapping I’ve been taking my meds everyday now. Thanks bodymapping.
An exciting new way to explore your body, mind, and soul. Brings out your “inner artist”! Relates living with HIV to many important aspects life: psycho-social, physical, spiritual, artistic/creative. This workshop is highly holistic, completely fun, and very effective.

Natasha Bogdasavich
Opening Reception
Saturday, April 10th from 2 - 4 pm
"Sand Boxes is a body of work which makes use of natural materials in representing shapes, patterns and processes found in nature. This work explores the concepts of minimalism, impulsiveness, balance and authenticity."
Natasha Bogdasavich attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and the University of Regina. For the past several years, she has been working as a visual and performance artist. Currently she is focused mainly as a painter, but in her work she explores the boundaries between this discipline and those of sculpture and movement. Originally from Regina, she has lived in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, and is now based in Edmonton.
