Jazz Up Your Portraits!

Do you wish to jazz up your portraiture by adding a few new elements, new colours, new effects? In this 3-week class you will learn how to turn a beautiful portrait into an edgy, colorful portrait painting. You will be able to tell your story on canvas through mixed-media techniques – using Japanese paper, gels, paint, oil sticks, markers, and more. Colour and texture are the keys to success in this exciting and fun class. You will also receive a few tips on line work, layering, developing values, creating dynamic colour contrast and other important topics. This class is open to acrylic and oil painters at intermediate to advance levels; experience with portrait painting is required.

About the Instructor:   Classically trained in Eastern Europe, Oksana began her art career in L'viv, Ukraine. Oksana studied at the Ivan Trush College of Decorative Arts. She chose to make painting, especially of murals, her specialty. In 2001, she held her first solo exhibition at the L'viv University of Ivan Franko. Oksana brings her training, skill, and passion to her painting, and she is versatile in expressive styles. She is adept at many genres, including portraiture, still life, and landscape.

  • Suggested paints (based on Gamblin oil or Holbein acrylic): Titanium White Cadmium Yellow Deep   Cadmium Red Light or Napthol Scarlet   Raw Sienna   Asphaltum (oil)/Burnt Umber (acrylic)   Alizarin Permanent   Cobalt Blue Hue   Payne’s Grey   Van Dyke Brown OR bring your own favourite colours
  • Medium: Galkyd or Galkyd Lite (oil); Gloss Medium (acrylic) AND small container any acrylic medium for adhering paper to your support
  • Support: 16x20”, 14x18”, OR 16x16” canvas
  • Brushes: Princeton bristle Filberts #2, #4, #8 (oil) or equivalent acrylic brushes; Liner synthetic brush and #2 round synthetic brush
  • Other supplies: Japanese paper surprise pack AND 1 small sheet chiyogami small sponge brush   large palette or palette paper
  • Suitable art clothes, hand-/tea towel, soft clothes for brushes. Snack, drink, & notebook optional.
