Plein-Air in the City with David Shkolny

Instructor: David Shkolny

Ever want to try painting outdoors but were a bit scared to begin? Join instructor David Shkolny in this class where we will explore painting various locations in Edmonton, including parks, alleys, and the river valley. Choose your medium, from pastel to watercolour, to oil or acrylic. David will demo in pastel and acrylic. Learn everything from planning an underpainting to choosing a composition, to capturing fleeting light.

 About the Instructor David Shkolny grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1992). He has been teaching painting and drawing since 2001. David’s artwork is in collections across Europe and North America as well as the Canada Council.

Recent public commissions include a painting for Fort Saskatchewan City Hall as well as a pastel for the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. See David’s work on his website, davidshkolny.com/.

Supplies:  Participants receive a 20% discount on art supplies purchased on class days.

  • Bring the supplies appropriate to your medium, whether pastels, watercolour, acrylic or oil paints. Best results arise from artist quality materials! Bring some handy clean-up supplies, too.
  • Bring an easel or drawing board on which to place your art while you work
  • Prepare for being out of doors in various locations and possibly various kinds of weather.

*Please bring suitable art clothes, hand-/tea-towel, notepad, snack, & drink.
